Over the last few years, I have been making a conscious effort to switch to products that are better for the environment and better for my health, including my skincare products. I began to realize just how much single-use plastic I had in my home. At the same time, I am picky about the products that I use, especially on my face. I was not satisfied with the zero-waste options available at my local store, so began researching clean products that were available to the masses.

One of the things that drew me to Youth to the People products is that everything comes in a glass container. It may sound silly, but this alone is what initially prompted me to try their products. And, so far, I have not been disappointed! In this post, I will be reviewing 4 products that I have tried so far:

  1. Superfood Cleanser (US$ 36, available from YTTP and Sephora)

  2. 15% Vitamin C + Clean Caffeine Energy Serum (US$ 68, available at YTTP and Sephora)

  3. Adaptogenic Moisture Cream (US$ 58, available at YTTP and Sephora)

  4. Superclay Purify + Clear Power Mask (US$ 36, available from YTTP and Sephora)

A few things about my skin before reading on, since this will give context to my reviews:

  • I have dry skin, especially during winter (I live in Canada). I get breakouts on my cheeks and jawline.

  • I am sensitive to products that I can feel on my face. If they do not absorb completely, it’s a no-go for me!

  • I do not have sensitive skin, in that most products do not cause redness, itchiness, or rashes.

What is Youth to the People?

Youth to the People (or YTTP) was established in 2015 and is a clean skincare brand. YTTP is based in California. All of their products are 100% vegan and cruelty-free. Their products are made using plant extracts, and there is a heavy focus on nutrient-dense ingredients that are research-backed. Their packaging is made of glass or post-consumer materials (whenever possible, according to their website), and they focus on sustainability as one of the main pillars of their company.

Superfood Cleanser

Ingredients include: Proprietary Superfoods Blend: Kale, Spinach, Green Tea, Alfalfa, Vitamins C and E

For most of my life, I have not been a regular user of facial cleansers. I have dry skin and I found that almost every cleanser I tried would leave my face feeling tight and uncomfortable. I have been using the Superfood Antioxidant Cleanser twice a day and I find it is gentle enough to not dry out my skin while still cleansing. This makes me happy since I do get breakouts and want to be able to cleanse my skin without discomfort. I definitely have to moisturize after using it, but that is normal for me (especially during winter!). I do not wear a lot of makeup, but I find that it easily cleans away my mascara and any concealer I wear.

It has a thick consistency coming out of the pump, and it foams up nicely. I find I only need a small amount (around ¼ pump) to thoroughly wash my face. The website says to use 1-2 pumps, but that would be a big waste for me.

The smell is fresh and pleasant. Really, it smells like you would expect a green juice-inspired cleanser to smell. The smell is mild and does not linger.

15% Vitamin C + Clean Caffeine Energy Serum

Ingredients include: Antioxidant Blend: 15% Triple-C Complex, Passion + Dragon Fruit Extracts; Superleaf Blend: Yerba Mate + Guayusa

I have tried a few Vitamin C serums, and this is definitely my favourite one. It doesn’t feel sticky on my face or leave any kind of film, which is something that I am very sensitive to when it comes to face products (I can’t stand it!). I find that it does add a little bit of a shine to my face. I have been using it for about 2 months now and am not totally convinced that I see any brightening effects, but it also hasn’t caused any sensitivity or breakouts.

It has a pretty watery consistency and I have to make sure that I shake the bottle well before using. I use 2 pumps ever morning after cleansing and it absorbs into my skin in about a minute. I apply moisturizer after the serum has absorbed.

This serum smells like fresh cut ginger, which I love. The smell does not linger.

Adaptogen Moisture Cream

Ingredients include: Proprietary Adaptogen Blend: Ashwagandha, Rhodiola, and Reishi; Squalane

I bought the small version of the Adaptogen Moisture Cream since I tend to be picky about moisturizers. I need something that moisturizes deeply, and since I do not like to “feel” anything on my face it also can’t be too thick! I was hesitant at first because the cream is not very thick, but it has a nice smooth texture to it and it absorbs into my skin nicely. It feels lightweight on my face, but also keeps my skin moisturized all day without being greasy. I have been using it twice a day after cleansing and any other products (like serums).

I am not a big fan of the smell of this moisturizer, but like all the other Youth To The People products I tried the scent does not linger. It has an earthy smell to it.

I will definitely be buying the larger size of this moisturizing cream!

Adaptogenic Moisture Cream is US$ 58 and is available at YTTP and Sephora

Superclay Purify + Clear Power Mask

Ingredients include: Superclay Blend: Sustainable French Green, White + Volcanic Clays; Active Clearing Complex: 2% Niacinamide, BHA, + Red Willow Bark

I usually steer clear of clay masks because they tend to be too drying for my skin. I was happy to find that the YTTP clay mask was gentle enough that it did not completely dry out my face. I gather that this is because of the added niacinamide, which helps strength the skin’s moisture barrier. It contains gently exfoliating ingredients, which is great.

The mask has a thick texture and is nice and smooth. It goes on easily, and doesn’t require a face cloth to wash off. I have been using this once or twice a week.

This has a clay or playdough-like smell, but it is not too strong and washes away with the mask.

Superclay Purify + Clear Power Mask is US$ 36 and is available from YTTP and Sephora

Overall, I loved every product I tried. I am blown away by Youth To The People, and will definitely be repurchasing these items when I run out. With this success, I will be happy to try out some of their other offerings as I work through the products already in my cupboard! (like the hydrating Dream Mask or the Kombucha/AHA toner)
